Whirlpool chooses Urban Mining
Tétris was commissioned by Whirlpool to refurbish their new office more efficiently compared to the previous one. Due to company’s reorganisation, only a limited budget was available for this project, which allowed us to get creative with the materials at hand. As a partner of the Urban Mining Collective, this project presented Tétris with the perfect opportunity to apply the concept of material recovery and waste minimisation.
Whirlpool’s new location previously housed an electronics company, which had constructed the building itself. As a result, the engineering and installations were perfectly useable. We removed the plasterboards from existing storage units and reused them as underlayment on other floors.
The building had been designed with glass cassette walls throughout. We dismantled and used them to create conference rooms and two office spaces. For more light and a spatial effect, some glass cassette walls were used as partition walls in the (previously closed) storage units, transforming them into pleasant, transparent conference rooms. This way, we were able to reuse everything!
A new pantry was built where the pantries once were, which meant all the water pipes and power points could be reused. The walls around the pantries were knocked down to create a big open space with a coffee table, which is ideal as a meeting space for teams and departments. Wood effect vinyl flooring, a wooden table with chairs and a beautiful lamp complete the transformation.
Because only materials from within the building were reclaimed and repurposed, no transport was needed. This enabled us to reduce the carbon footprint of the renovation by 50% compared to traditional renovation projects.
